Madison County Memorial Hospital Receives USDA Grants
Surgical Suite is Big Business

(Madison County, Florida, Feb. 14, 2020) – In light of the high cost of healthcare technology, Madison County Memorial Hospital (MCMH) sought federal support to help outfit the Operating Room with surgical equipment and furnishings necessary for general surgery. The replacement building built in 2014 included a surgical suite but since that time has been vacant.  Since the hospital has recruited a general surgeon and other licensed professionals with surgical experience and received a grant from the USDA-RD, MCMH can now move forward. Without the support from external sources, residents and businesses, this would have been impossible to embark upon. We are blessed with the following:

  • County Government: support $243,000 loan towards Operating Room salaries.
  • MCMH Investment & Federal Government: USDA approved two separate grants- August 2019 – Federal Match $212,150 and Madison Hospital cash match $70,717.  December 2019 – Federal Match $189K and Madison Hospital cash match $63K.
  • Thanks to MCMH past Board Chair, the late, Mr. Howard Phillips’ request for residents to give in his honor and memory, fundraising activities supported by residents and businesses, the Public-Private-Partnership contribution is $8,527.73 to date via a Capital Campaign that is still in progress.

“The challenges with establishing a state-of-the-art operating room and the complexity of each piece of equipment and supplies to outfit it, is big business for a rural hospital”, said Tammy Stevens, Chief Executive Officer for the hospital.  Each piece of equipment requires three quotes, an abundance of research, money to purchase it and experts to get it installed. To date, we have a review meeting scheduled with the Agency for Health Care Administration to approve the hospital to install three new pieces of equipment.

A series of fundraising opportunities launched in 2020.  Residents and businesses can participate in-person and online.  If you would like to help bring much needed Surgical procedures to Madison, we invite you to partner with us by contacting Lori Evans at
